Call to Collaborate!
Currently there is no common recognition of the title Compliance Officer across the EU. The fact that there is no official title of the Compliance Officer leads to confusion in roles, responsibilities, core competences and eduction. We can change this!
Integrity in business is our top priority. The Compliance Officer in its todays role is essential to achieving this. Acting proactively and responsibly to provide expert advice, monitor implementation and serve as a strategic partner in building ethical business practices.
However, the new EU Anti-Money Laundering Directive (AMLD6) allows member states to translate the “Compliance Officer” title into their own languages. While well-intentioned, this creates a critical problem. It fragments a profession that requires standardised competencies, education, qualifications and recognition.

Why standardisation and harmonisation matters? When each country uses different titles, we lose:
The Compliance Officer function anno 2025 is cross-sectoral. The role to date is ‘commonly known’ within financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, technology, government and beyond. Across all industries, the role demands specialised knowledge in applicable regulatory frameworks, risk management skills, understanding business ethics and integrity oversight. The Compliance Officer stimulates and creates awareness and supports management in the mission of integer business activities. These competencies transcend both language and sectoral barriers and require international recognition.
Our intention:
We call on the EU commission to establish the title “Compliance Officer” as the standardised professional title across all member states. With clearly defined minimum competencies and qualifications. This ensures alignment across the European business ecosystem and protects the vital role these professionals fullfill in safeguarding integrity.
In order to achieve the impact our business and society need we should harmonise the title and function. After all, integrity in business requires clarity in roles.
